Cheltenham Day 2 Betting Tips
x5 Racing Post NAPs Champion Paul Jacobs deep-dives into the cards for Cheltenham Day 2 tips and predictions.
Ballymore Novices Hurdle Betting Tips
Envoi Allen is the worthy favourite based on his runs this season and would not look out of the pace in the Champion Hurdle. On my private ratings has a 6lbs call over his 11 fellow novice rivals.
Time may well show that betting odds of even-money are outstanding. But despite the relatively small field, this looks a really good renewal of this event. Several unexposed rivals could significantly close the gap on him.
Sporting John has looked a galloper, pure and simple this season, but a smart one to boot.
I did think he was slightly flattered by the style of his Ascot win as the race set up really nicely for him. However, he could do no more than win but I actually believe the Albert Bartlett would serve him better.
Willie Mullins is keen on THE BIG GETAWAY. He told me last week that he is improving very quickly and will be involved at the business end here. A winner of two of his three starts – a bad mistake at Leopardstown putting paid to his chance in December – he has reportedly taken a huge step forward since winning at Naas in January.
Of the remainder, The Big Breakaway, Longhouse Poet and Easywork are respected in a fascinating renewal.
RSA Novices Chase Betting Tips
Strength-in-depth wise this is one of the weaker renewals of the novice stayers championship in some years.
There is little doubt that Champ has the motor inside to go close, but he doesn’t look straight forward both in his run style and fencing technique. For those reasons I believe his betting odds of 3/1 are on the short side.
On genuinely soft ground Copperhead just about has the best form in the field. He is an uncomplicated ride, jumps superbly and has a resolute galloping style. Again, his betting odds of around 4/1 have also diminished substantially in the past week so the value now is with SLATE HOUSE each-way.
His Prestbury Park record combined with his strong travelling style make him an interesting contender ahead of Minella Indo (may need a stiffer test over fences) and Pym (best on good ground).
Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle Betting Tips
As always a brutally competitive big field event and there are so many potentially well handicapped entries here.
I have fallen down on the side of the Lanzarote hero BURROWS EDGE. He was slightly lucky that the leaders came to grief that day in the closing stages. But he was still finishing to some effect and this deeper test will help him.
Stable mate Dame de Compagnie has solid course form and remains progressive. However, there are a whole host of potential players at shorter betting odds. Bachasson has a great chance off this mark. While at huge betting odds of 33/1 The Mighty Don could hit the frame.
Queen Mother Champion Chase Betting Tips
There is no doubting the high esteem with which Chacun Pour Soi is held and he has transferred that view onto the track.
I’m convinced he wants a flatter track though. He found it difficult seeing off Min in the Dublin Chase when they raced from a long way out.
Defi Du Seuil is top class and rightly feared. However, I think everything has gone his way this season getting a lovely tow into his races before staying on strongly.
With ALTIOR missing the race due to being lame. The race is wide open. I’m going with Defi Du Seuil.
Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase Betting Tips
All the recent money has been for French challenger Easysland who hacked up over the course and distance last year. Of course, he would be meeting a few of these on better terms in a handicap, but he remains on an upward curve.
Another course and distance winner, Urgent de Gregaine, also has place claims, but even if you factor in a rather interrupted preparation and take 7lbs off his rating, TIGER ROLL is still the clear best and I will be surprised if anything can usurp him here.
The each-way alternative at betting odds of 16/1 is the unexposed NEVERUSHACON, a staying on fifth over the C&D in December and is worth a saver.
Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Betting Tips
This is nearly always run at a fearsome pace and despite being run on the sharper of the two tracks an entry with stamina normally comes to the fore.
Aramax is well regarded by Gordon Elliot, but his hurdling sometimes leaves something to be desired, but Thyme White is solid in that arena and looks vastly over priced at betting odds of 10/1.
Off a handicap mark of 135, Blacko, a winner at Taunton and Warwick, shouldn’t be underestimated, but my betting prediction goes to TRONADOR.
He has looked a strong stayer on both of his last two outings at Thurles and Navan and may have been let in lightly here off a rating of just 129 and I know the trainer likes him a lot here.
Weatherbys Champion Bumper Betting Tips
The last of my Cheltenham Day 2 tips comes from the day’s final race – the Champion Bumper.
You will have read plenty about Appreciate It being very highly regarded by Willie Mullins, the king of the bumper horses, and that view was rammed home to me by Ruby Walsh when I was on a recent preview panel with him.
But in such a big field, where some luck in running plays a part, I need bigger betting odds to hit the value sweet spot and ADRIMEL fits the bill.
If this son of Tirwanako was under the care of a Henderson, Mullins, Nicholls or Elliott then I would venture to suggest he would be half the betting odds of his current 25/1.
I was especially impressed by his success at Doncaster where he travelled like the wrath of god, but found loads under pressure despite a load of greeness.
With that run under his belt and another step froward here, he is preferred to the Closutton favourite and the likes of Ferny Hollow and Israel Champ.
